Of the 73 cases of the mutant virus, 30 samples were found to be infected with the new COVID-19 variant at National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune. Delhi-based Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) recorded 20 cases and 11 were registered by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences Hospital (NIMHANS) Bengaluru. Delhi-based National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) recorded eight.
Total Covid-related deaths touched 1.5 lakh with 264 deaths over the past day when at least 21,314 people recovered from the disease. With this, active cases have come down to 2,27,546 - around 2 per cent of the total caseload - as recoveries neared the one-crore mark.
