Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, whose government recently won a keenly watched trust vote on August 10 after three BJP MLAs resigned from the party, told TOI on Thursday that "differences can happen in any party. BJP is a democratic party… such differences can be sorted out. We are actively working together. Unity will remain forever".

This came even as his son-in-law R K Imo Singh, a Congress MLA, was expelled from the organization for “anti-party activities” the same day. “It depends on him (Imo) if he wants to join the BJP,” Biren said. On Wednesday, five Congress legislators had joined the BJP in Delhi.

"As of now, I cannot say much on Imo. Though he is my son-in-law, what decision he will take is up to him. Let’s hope, wait and watch," Biren said, hours after he had flown into Delhi from Imphal with the Congress MLAs.

Many see Imo’s move to the BJP as a foregone conclusion. If and when that happens, it will add to the BJP’s numbers in Manipur. As of now, the BJP and its allies sit comfortably in the 60-member house. Biren, too, had defected from Congress before the 2017 Manipur polls but faced a rebellion in June fronted by public works and rural development minister Thongam Biswajit Singh and deputy CM Y Jokumar Singh.

"I am confident for the by-polls. The party is united. Besides, they have to be held within six months. We are ready forit if the EC wants to time it with the Bihar polls," the CM said.
