KHONGJOM WAR MEMORIAL COMPLEX
Khongjom War Memorial Complex located at Khongjom is one of the popular tourist places in Thoubal district, Manipur. The Complex, 36 km from Imphal, the capital of Manipur, on the Indo-Myanmar road is of the most important major historical places that reminds the visitors about the war between the brave people of Manipur and the British Army in 1891. Specifically, the memorial is dedicated to Major General Paona Brajabashi who martyred while serving for his motherland. Major Brajabashi was one of the great soldiers from Manipur who showed his utmost courage and valour against the invading British Army in 1891. Besides, Khongjom War Memorial also serves as the reminiscent of the brave warriors, the state of Manipur has produced in the past, who fought for their native land. At present, the Khongjom War Memorial is a popular sightseeing destination in the region where tourists get to savour the sights of a 30-feet high entrance, rolling hills and gorgeous valleys.
The hillock at the foot of which he laid down his life in defense of his motherland, is reminiscent of the past heroic deeds of Manipuri warriors. A war memorial has been constructed on the top of Kheba hill. Khongjom Day is observed every year on 23rd of April in memories of Paona and other martyrs who died in Khongjom for the defense of their motherland. This complex has green grass fields and crystal clear water pond in the center which creates an ideal location for photography.
