Bajaj Chetak is back. Yes, the legendary scooter has been unveiled in India. But this time around it has donned an electric attire. The new Chetak electric marks the re-entry of Bajaj Auto in the country's scooter segment, where the two-wheeler maker was one of the most dominant players till some 15 years back.
If you are already nostalgic and thinking about those good old days when Bajaj Chetak was your preferred mode of transportation, I would request you to hold on. The Chetak electric scooter is completely different from its ICE (internal combustion engine) predecessor. Below are all the important details you need to know about it.
Expected launch :
The new Chetak electric scooter will be launched in India in January 2020. Initially, the sales will start in Pune and Bengaluru. It will be sold from the existing Probiking network with KTM and Husqvarna.
The new Chetak will have a tubular single-sided suspension at the front and a monoshock at the rear. Also present will be a single-sided cast aluminium swingarm. There will be a disc up front, while the rear will have a drum brake. The electric scooter will make use of 12-inch wheels. It will come with a regenerative braking system.
The new Chetak electric scooter will have an all-metal body. Interestingly, there will no Bajaj branding on Chetak. Other features include digital console, horseshoe-shaped LED headlight with DRLs and sequential scrolling LED blinkers. There will be a mobile app to assist the rider.
Motor and battery :
The new Chetak will reportedly be powered by a 4kW electric motor. It will have an IP67-rated lithium-ion battery, which can be charged through a standard 5-15 amp electrical outlet. Bajaj Auto has also said that it will provide a home-charging station at a nominal cost.
The Chetak electric scooter will have Eco and Sport driving modes. Its range will be 95 km in the Eco mode, while the Sport mode will have a range of 85 km.
